On Monday, March 29 at 6 p.m.At Tallinn University, room S-524We will
selectively view fiction films of northeast Burma's Kachin people (no
subtitles), nationalist propaganda videos of the Kachin Independence
Organization, videos of the standardized and reshaped folk dances of
China's Kachins, travel photos from Kachinland and other rare media from
the private collection of Karin Dean, senior researcher at the Estonian
Institute of Humanitities of Tallinn University. The goal is to learn about
the present-day of the little-known Kachinland and Burma/ Myanmar.The
Kachins are one of the many smaller groups of peoples in Burma, who have
for several decades fought against the violent rule of the state's military
junta. Their military independence organization controls a number of
territories, where they function as a quasi-state, with border check-points
and a school. You may read closer about the Kachin here.Journalists from the
Pulitzer Center have reported on the current state of the Kachin freedom
fighters like as follows (read more).
