The focus of this year’s Tallinn Summer School is globalisation
International focus is a key characteristic of Tallinn University, and agood example of this is its international Summer School. The sixth annualTallinn Summer School, from July 12 to 30, studies the process ofglobalisation. In addition to top-level Estonian experts, the Summer Schoolprogramme also includes internationally acclaimed opinion leaders andintellectuals. This year’s keynote speaker is Professor GayatriChakravorty Spivak, a classic of postcolonialism from Columbia University.
To date, nearly 300 people from more than 40 countries have registered for
different courses of the Summer School already. Registration for available
courses is open until 4.07.2010.The course “Multifaceted
Globalisation“, consisting of intensive lectures, seminars, workshops and
study trips, carries the basic idea of the Summer School. The keynote
speaker of this course is Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, a living classic.
Prof. Spivak will be accompanied by Nick Lawrence and Graeme MacDonald,
lecturers from the University of Warwick, and George Schöpflin,
philosopher. The Summer School programme consists of a total of 16 courses,
including such novelties as “Creative Psychotherapy”, “New Media and
Innovation Management”, and “Promotion and Communication in Social
Marketing”. Prof. Rein Raud, Rector of TU, will also contribute to the
development of the Summer School by leading the “World Philosophy”
course, which will bring international scholars such as Henry Rosemont Jr.
(Brown University), Carine Defoort (K. U. Leuven), Jonardon Ganeri
(University of Sussex) and Janis Ešots (University of Latvia) to Tallinn.
Hopefully this Summer School course will evolve into a master’s programme
of Tallinn University. As a tradition, the Summer School provides an
opportunity for students to get acquainted with different languages and
cultures: you can learn Estonian, Spanish, Russian, English and Italian
language and culture. The language courses will be conducted by native
speakers.Holding public lectures open for everyone is another tradition of
the Summer School. On July 23, Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak will give a
lecture on “An Aesthetic Education in the Age of Globalizations”.
Indrek Teder, the Estonian Chancellor of Justice, will also hold a public
lecture, speaking about constitutional patriotism on July 26.Upon
completion of the selected courses, all participants are welcome to take
part in field trips organised specifically for the Summer School. This
year’s trip takes participants through St. Petersburg and Moscow, pass
Lake Baikal and arrive at Vladivostok on the Trans-Siberian Express. A more
modest, but equally interesting trip takes students to the capitals of
Latvia and Lithuania: Riga and Vilnius. For more information about the
