From the beginning of the year, researchers engaged in the field of Asian studies have met regularly at Tallinn University. Their aim is to increase the awareness of studies related to Asia in society by raising their visibility at the social level.
Under the auspices of the Rectorate, Asia-related gatherings have taken place with Siim Sikkut from the Government Office, Marko Mihkelson from the Foreign Affairs Committee of Riigikogu, Oliver Ait from the Ministry of Economy and Communication, Kristi Tiivas from Enterprise Estonia, and also Alar Streimann, Andres Unga and other representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under the guidance of the Rectorate, an Asian cooperation-cluster was simultaneously initiated with the purpose of strengthening cooperation between institutes; mapping the expertise that exists within the university; finding opportunities for implementation in both the private and public sectors as well as making Asian studies concluded at the university more visible at the level of society.
Initial steps have been taken in an initiative that will see more of the Asian knowledge base that is presently veiled within the university, being offered to a wider public audience. Since last autumn, the “Asia at the University” programme offers everyone an opportunity to become acquainted with Asian societies and cultures.
Also, a training programme based on actual topics related to Asia is offered in the autumn semester to entrepreneurs and State officials as well as to civil associations. Asian studies conducted at TU and the humanitarian crises of the region are addressed more specifically during the World Day on 31 May. Also, the TU Asian cooperation-cluster will participate this summer (15-16 August) in the Opinion Festival in Paide with their discussion, which focuses on the relations between Estonia and Asian countries.
