The ongoing crisis in Ukraine has led to a widespread building of security scenarios. Different states and regions in Europe are redrawing their preparedness plans and drawing lessons learnt. In the Nordic-Baltic region, this has led to imagining the unimaginable. The sources of insecurity are seen in the Crimean type of hybrid warfare. Much of the foresight concerns Russian intentions and capabilities. However, new dimensions such as cyber security are integrated into these often bleak scenarios. What are the worst and the most likely sources of insecurity in the Nordic-Baltic region? What are the best remedies for these prognostications? Should security be seen as a systemic capability or as a capability based on the resources of single states?
The open session "Scenarios of Insecurity" at the Tallinn University is part of CUSPP Summer Session at FIIA on "Nordic-Baltic Security and US Role in the Region after Ukraine" arranged in cooperation with the TLU’s Institute of Political Science and Governance. The idea of the Summer Session is to bring together insightful experts and researchers to discuss about key (re)emerging trends influencing the security of the Baltic Sea Region and changing global order. The events in Ukraine have demonstrated that security in the Nordic and Baltic region is dependent on wider dynamics of international order. The events have catalyzed debates about the shape of the international order, US leadership, transatlantic relations, the future of small states, and the nature of rising illiberal actors. The CUSPP Summer Session of 2014 will be a kickoff event for addressing Nordic-Baltic Security and US geostrategy on the research agenda of the Center for US Politics and Power at FIIA.
