Public seminar „Encounters of Oral and Literary Cultures in Baltic Sea
Region CA. 1200 – 1700” is taking place in Institute of History,
Tallinn University on 2-3 September, Rüütli St. 10, auditorium
1.The interactions of oral and literary cultures have traditionally
attracted different fields of humanities and social studies, such as
history, anthropology, folkloristics and linguistics. The multidisciplinary
seminar will introduce some recent trends in the study of literacy and
orality and test them on the material from the medieval and early modern
Baltic Sea Region. The seminar is organized by the project Oral and
Literary Cultures in Medieval and Early Modern Baltic Sea Region: Cultural
Transfer, Linguistic Registers and Communicative Networks and the Finnish
Literature Society in collaboration with the Nordic Centre for Medieval
Studies (NCMS, Bergen) and Centre for Medieval Studies, Tallinn University
