The lecture deals with the problems of history writing in a changing world.
The century-long tradition of writing history from a national perspective
is being challenged by globalisation trends in science. On the one hand,
history as a science cannot be written in the narrow frameworks of national
narratives anymore. On the other hand, in popular understanding, history
still is considered to be important in providing a given collective of
people a coherent story of its past, in fact thus justifying the existance
of national states. While this is especially true for the young democracies
in the former Soviet bloc, in international historiography the concept of
„transnational“ histories gained prominence recently. The lecture is in
English. Everybody is welcome!
