The next public lecture of Studia Generalia entitled "Communism: How to
Understand It" will be delivered by Robert Service, Professor of Russian
History at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom). The lecture will take
place in the Tallinn Hall (M-218, TU Mare building, Uus-Sadama 5) on
Thursday, May 26 at 16:00. The lecture will be in English. Politicians,
scientists and people in general have suggested very many ways to
understand communism. The view that the essence of communism was dependent
on a specific country is very common. However, is it possible that a basic
model of communism was developed in Russia which then moved to other
communist countries? If so, then why? What were these external and internal
influences that made Brezhnev's Soviet Union, Castro's Cuba and Pol Pot's
Cambodia similar? And why has it been so difficult to reform communism
without completely getting rid of communist power?Robert Service is a
Professor of Russian History at the University of Oxford; he is also a
member of the British Academy. Professor Service has published several
research papers dealing with Russian history. Among others is a
comprehensive overview of the history of Russia in the 20th
century   titled “A History of Modern Russia: from Tsarism to
the Twenty-First Century” (2009). One of his recent books, “Comrades: A
World History of Communism” (2007, in Estonian 2010), is widely read
throughout the world. Service is best-known for his trilogy of historical
biographies: “Lenin” (2000, in Estonian 2002), “Stalin” (2004) and
“Trotsky” (2009, in Estonian 2011).Professor Service is visiting
Estonia as a guest of Tallinn Literature Festival HeadRead and with the
