The next lecture of Studia Generalia at Tallinn University will be
delivered by the Norwegian writer and historian Karsten Alnæs, who will
talk about European identity. The lecture will be held in the auditorium of
the TU Mare building (M-225) on May 6th at 16:00. The lecture will be
introduced by Leif Kalev, director of the TU Institute of Political Science
and Governance. The lecture will be held in English. In all larger
communities where people do not know each other by sight, the sense of
unity is reputedly created through a set of common imaginary
characteristics. This phenomenon applies even to the smallest states, to
say nothing of Europe as a whole. The lecture of the historian and writer
Karsten Alnæs takes the audience on a journey through the history of
Europe, bringing out its versatile facets, be it cultural, religious or
political – all these aspects play a role in the development of the
European identity.Karsten Alnæs (born in 1938) is a multifaceted and
productive Norwegian historian, writer, teacher and journalist. He is most
well known for his five-volume Norwegian History („Historien om
Norge“), but he has also written a book about Europe in the period of
1300 to 1600 („Historien om Europa 1300-1600“) and several textbooks.
He has also published 15 works of fiction, many of which are based on
historical material. He has been given a number of literature awards for
his novels, including the Brageprisen award on two occasions. Alnæs has
worked as the president of the Norwegian Writers’ Union, as the cultural
editor of one of the biggest Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet, and as a
lecturer of journalism. He is currently a member of the European Cultural
Parliament. His lecture on European identity is included into the
curriculum of the Oslo University College. In addition to his lecture at
Tallinn University, Alnæs will participate in the Tartu International
Literature Festival Prima Vista on May 5th, where he will give a lecture on
the most well-known politician and writer from the Norwegian national
awakening movement, the Nobel Prize winner Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.Studia
