From Curiosity to Contribution: A Politics and Governance Student’s Path

What drew you to the Politics and Governance program, and how has your background influenced your studies?
I have always been fascinated by politics and how decisions made far away can shape our everyday lives. I also love to learn about languages and enjoy freely exploring different subjects, such as history or geography. It was after living and volunteering abroad for almost a year, that I fully embraced my interests in international relations and multiculturalism. Additionally, I learned how to positively contribute to a society. That is what drew me to the Politics and Governance BA program at Tallinn University. In this program, I have flexibility in shaping my studies according to my broad interests as well as the opportunity to better understand the world around me and how to influence it. Besides, I get to experience life in a country that was previously unknown to me.
Can you share how Tallinn University's approach to teaching politics differs from what you expected?
Tallinn University’s teaching approach is quite different from what I expected. Here, it seems like there is a strong emphasis on interactive learning. Rather than merely listening to endless lectures, followed by a demanding final exam, I am engaging in debates, group work, and have practical assignments. This way of teaching genuinely suits my style of studying. Additionally, I am able to ask various questions and directly engage with lecturers and faculty staff. Plus, within my considerably small student group I do not feel overlooked.
What kind of career paths are you considering with this degree?
Since there is not a specific path that I must take after this degree, it sometimes feels like the whole world is open to me. Although I am planning on continuing my education with a masters degree, I am already considering several career paths following my academic journey. My main goal in life is to contribute to positive change in the world. Thus, I am particularly interested in working with an NGO and supporting people in need. Another option for me would be to specialize on political eduction and help to raise awareness on important matters.
How do your classmates’ diverse perspectives contribute to your learning?
My classmates come from a wide range of countries, even beyond Europe, which gives me the rare opportunity to learn about different and unique outlooks on life. It's a privilege to hear my classmates`s views on political issues, especially when they directly their home countries. I am able to learn how different contexts shape different opinions. Moreover, this diversity greatly enhances my understanding of global politics and it also sometimes challenges me to question my own assumptions and improve upon dialogue.
What advice would you give someone from your home country who’s thinking of applying?
My advice is to just go for it! Studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity for personal growth and making lifelong memories. The Politics and Governance program at Tallinn University gives you the chance to better understand and shape the world around you. Plus, you get to be part of a welcoming, diverse student community. You are more likely to regret not applying at all than to regret giving it your best shot. So take a leap of faith and during the application process simply be yourself!
