Thirty years after Srebrenica: Commemorating genocide from the local to the global

Join us for this event for the thirty-year mark since genocide was committed on over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina in July 1995. This important anniversary provides a moment of reflection on how the legacy of the genocide has been dealt with until now, and what the challenges and opportunities are for its future remembrance.

The event will explore pertinent questions on memory, justice and responsibility. The  event opens with the screening of The Fog of Srebrenica (2015), an award-winning  documentary that, through survivors interviews, clarifies the events of July 1995, as well as  the continued hardships that survivors continue to face. After the screening, a panel  discussion of academics and practitioners will reflect on the unfolding legacy of the  genocide: How have local and global dynamics given shape to this remembrance? How does  genocide denial and revisionism continue to affect Srebrenica’s legacy? How do cultural  production, activism and diaspora engagement carry and reshape transnational engagements  with the genocide? And looking ahead: what are pressing challenges or opportunities in the  Srebrenica genocide beyond this thirty-year mark?
