From November 25 to 28, 2024, Tallinn University's School of Educational Sciences is hosting a 13-member delegation from Ukraine, comprising officials from the Ministry of Education and representatives of local municipalities. The purpose of the visit is to explore Estonia's education policies, the role of local governments, and innovative approaches to early childhood education, including the concept of outdoor kindergartens.

The visit began at Tallinn University, where the delegation was introduced to the university's role in preparing early childhood education teachers and its research and development activities. The program for the first day included meetings with Kristi Klaasmägi, the Vice-Rector for Educational Innovation, and Tiia Õun, the Director of the School of Educational Sciences. Presentations were given on developing socio-emotional skills, innovative approaches to early childhood education curricula, and applying digital technologies. The day concluded with an inspirational seminar featuring Estonian educational technology companies such as AlpaKids, Clanbeat, and kood/Jõhvi, which showcased their practical solutions for enriching education.

In the following days, the delegation will visit Tallinn, Tartu, and Kohila, where they will explore several kindergartens to learn about outdoor learning concepts and quality assessment processes. Meetings are also scheduled with representatives of local governments in Tartu and Tallinn, including Tallinn's Deputy Mayor Aleksei Jašin, to discuss the organization and financing of early childhood education in the city. The kindergarten visits will focus on alternative approaches, including the concept of outdoor kindergartens and the importance of developing socio-emotional skills to support children's holistic development.

The delegation will also visit the Tallinn Teacher's House to learn about Estonia's in-service training opportunities in education and discuss strategies for supporting teachers' professional development.

The visit is funded by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV)
