The photos for this exhibition were taken in Beijing and Shanghai in the
autumn of 2010. The photographer was inspired by the relationship between
the city and people, the contrasts and the occasional emptiness – even
triviality - in this relationship. According to the author, both cities
left him with an extraordinary impression and a certain sense of craving.
The cities in Asia change in days - not years. Such a fast tempo and
colourfulness make people almost unable to comprehend the city; their
attempts to organize and structure it, seem vain. The author, Rasmus
Jurkatam, is a freelance professional photographer. He has studied Cultural
Theory in the Estonian Institute of Humanities at Tallinn University and
cooperated with most local and many international magazines. In his work,
Jurkatam focuses heavily on photos in advertising and portraits. His
personal interest, however, lies in the city and people or so-called street
photography. In order to see more of his work, please visit his
homepage. This photo exhibition is organised within the framework of the
Year of Science. It will remain open for viewing in the 2nd floor gallery
of the Terra building in Tallinn University until 29th February.
