Students participating in the Erasmus+ programme have the right to apply for a scholarship that helps cover additional expenses related to the exchange. The financial support of the Erasmus+ programme may not cover all of the costs related to study and/or internship abroad, and thus self-financing may also be necessary.

Top-up for green travelling

Green travel is defined as travel that uses low-emissions means of transport for the main part of the travel, such as bus, train or car-pooling. The support consists of a single contribution of 50€ and up to 6 days (3+3) of additional individual support to cover travel days for a return trip, if relevant.

In case the student is not able to verify that she/he has used low-emissions means of transport for the trip to the host country and back, the university has the right to reclaim the grant in the entire amount.

Erasmus+ programme additional support (250€/month) for students with fewer opportunities

The student is entitled to additional support intended for students with fewer opportunities when they are:

  1. recipient of Estonian needs-based study/special allowance,
  2. parent of minor child/children,
  3. from foster care background,
  4. with diminished work ability,
  5. with special health needs or a chronic illness.

To apply for additional support the student needs to present a declaration of honor to TLU International Studies Specialist.

Inclusion Support

The Inclusion Support is a grant based on actual expenses, intended for higher education graduate students who would not be able to participate in Erasmus+ mobility without additional financial support. It must be applied for sufficiently early before the start of mobility, and all potential expenses must be considered and detailed in the application (along with amounts). The Inclusion Support does not cover expenses related to visas and insurance, as these are covered by the living allowance. It should also be noted that the Erasmus+ programme is not intended to cover all possible expenses, and participants must take into account their own contribution.

For further information, and applying, contact TLU International Studies Specialist at outgoing@tlu.ee, tel 640 9134 (case-based applications).

Important to know

  • Erasmus+ program does not grant participants with the scholarship in case of distance learning without moving to the host country.
  • The calculation of the mobility period is counted ‘in days’ considering every month to have 30 days. Starting and ending date of the mobility is agreed in Learning Agreement. The actual duration of the exchange is confirmed from the Letter of Confirmation once the exchange has ended.
  • If the duration of the studies changes and is longer than planned, the student must inform the Senior Specialist for International Studies at least one month before the end of their mobility, not after the studies have ended.
  • The first part (80%) of the European Commission scholarship is paid before the exchange and the second part (20%) after the exchange, if all the required documents have been submitted and the duration of exchange studies is not shorter than agreed. Estonian Government Scholarship for long-term mobility is paid in full amount before the exchange.

  • Every student participating in Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Studies must be in possession of health, accident and liability insurance.
  • Be ready that the scholarship is not sufficient to cover all your expenses.
  • All tuition fee paying students who have been admitted before the academic year of 2018/19 are exempted from paying the tuition fee to TLU during their semester/year abroad, given they will not register for any of the TLU courses during their exchange period (incl. registering for the BA/MA thesis/final exam), as the latter automatically means the obligation to pay tuition fee. If their degree studies at TLU extend to an additional semester/year because of not managing to complete the degree studies during nominal time, they have to pay the tuition fee for each additional semester.
  • All tuition fee paying students who have been admitted between the academic years of 2018/19 and 2021/22 (both academic years included), have to pay 50% of their tuition fee to TLU during their semester/year abroad, given they will not register for any of the TLU courses during their exchange period (incl. registering for the BA/MA thesis/final exam), as the latter automatically means the obligation to pay tuition fee. If their degree studies at TLU extend to an additional semester/year because of not managing to complete the degree studies during nominal time, they have to pay the tuition fee for each additional semester.
  • All tuition fee paying students who have been admitted in the academic year of 2022/23, have to pay 100% of their tuition fee to TLU during their semester/year abroad.
  • Hosting university cannot ask tuition fee, any registration fee, etc. from an Erasmus+ student.
  • During their stay abroad, students still have the right to receive national grants, study allowance and loans on the same basis as students studying in Estonia. Students can apply for extra funding from different national or private funds for their studies abroad but as Erasmus students they are not allowed to use other grants coming from the official funds of the European Union (DoRa or Kristjan Jaak). The status and privileges of an Erasmus student can also be used without the grant (i.e. use the status of the Erasmus student and cover your own expenses).
