The interplay between the EU Charter and the European Convention on Human Rights

iCal calendarTobias Lock’s talk focuses on the relationship between the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights. He explains how both instruments protect fundamental rights in Europe but within different legal frameworks. In his lecture, he highlights the overlaps and differences between the two systems, showing where the Charter sometimes goes further, while the Convention remains central for other protections.
Tobias Lock is a Professor of Law at Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology and founding director of the Maynooth Centre for European Law, which was recently awarded the status of a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (REVEL-Realising European Values and European Law). From 2020-2023 he held a Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law and Fundamental Rights there. Originally from Germany, where obtained most of his legal qualifications, Prof. Lock joined Maynooth from the University of Edinburgh, where he was a senior lecturer in EU law and co-director of the Europa Institute. His research focuses on EU constitutional and fundamental rights law as well as the relationship between EU law, domestic law, and international law (which includes EU-ECHR relations and the law of Brexit).
