In this seminar, CIRIC (Centre for Advanced Research on Integrity, Rights and Inclusion of the Child) team presents their research on child participation based on the book Professional Practice in Child Protection and the Child’s Right to Participate

Current research literature documents across countries, how either the voice of the child is not heard or, alternatively, the existence of a tokenistic approach to listening to the child throughout child protection practices. During the presentation, the emphasis will be on how rights-based practice is achieved during Child Protective Services (CPS) practices. By focusing on article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the child’s right to express their views freely in matters that affect them, it will be discussed how CPS practices can be developed to uphold a human rights standard professionally. The rights of a child depend on CPS becoming empowered to perform its duty to uphold the rights of the child through professional practices and that practitioners know how to enforce human rights.

The seminar will be recorded for the project “Sotsiaalvadkonna tööjõu toetamine ja eriala arendamine”, financed by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the project: "Pädev lastekaitsetöötaja: lapse osalusõiguse edendamine abivajava lapse hindamisel" financed by EEA and Norway Grants 2014–2021.
