Confucius Institute at Tallinn University
The opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute at Tallinn University was
held on September 22nd, 2010. This Institute, the first in Estonia, is part
of the worldwide network of Confucius Institutes whose aim is to support
education in Chinese language and culture. The ceremony included speeches
by the Rector of Tallinn University Prof Rein Raud, the Chairman of
Cultural Affairs Commitee Peeter Kreitzberg, the Deputy Secretary-General
for Higher Education and Research Andres Koppel, the Director-General of
the International Chinese Language Council Xu Lin and a high-level
delegation of Chinese cultural and educational officials represented by Li
Changchuniga. The Confucius Institute at Tallinn University operates as
part of the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban).
There are more than 300 Confucius Institutes operating in foreign
universities throughout the world. These institutes operate in partnership
with universities in China and the partner university of the
Confucius Institute at Tallinn University is Guangxi University in
Nanning.The project was made possible thanks to the support of the Estonian
Embassy in China. The process was initiated in 2008 by Tõnis Lukas, the
Estonian Minister of Education and Research and the following year,
preparatory agreements were signed with the Estonian Ministry of Education
and Research and the Estonian Embassy in Beijing. In March 2010, the Rector
of Tallinn University Prof Rein Raud signed a cooperation agreement with
its new partner university, Guangxi University in Nanning.In Autumn 2010,
the Confucius Institute at Tallinn University began with four new
courses: two Chinese language classes in the morning, one evening class and
one Chinese philosophy seminar.Language training and weekly lectures make
up only a part of the Institute’s programme. The Institute has
plans to organise both popular science and extracurricular academic
lectures, film nights, celebrate Chinese national holidays and develop
cultural and educational cooperation between Estonia and the People´s
Republic of China. Students will also be able take the standardized Chinese
proficiency test (HSK) at Tallinn University in the near future.The
Confucius Institute at Tallinn University will also begin co-operation with
Tartu University as well as other Estonian universities. In accordance with
the agreements between Estonia and the People´s Republic of China, courses
in Estonian language and culture commenced on September 1st, 2010 at the
Beijing Foreign Studies University.
