Research Fellow in Estonian Sign Language (Postdoctoral)

General description of the position
The School of Humanities in Tallinn University is seeking a linguist to contribute to a research group specializing in Estonian Sign Language. We can consider offering the post-doctoral position. This is a fully funded position with guaranteed salary and benefits for up to 3 years with renewal opportunities based on performance.
Estonian sign language is one of the official Estonian languages and its status is determined by the Language Act. However, there is a shortage of sign language translators, and there are major gaps in Estonian sign language research. Tallinn University, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Research, is setting up a research group dedicated to sign language research. We would like to fill the position as soon as possible. We are also willing to consider part-time work and the possibility of postdoctoral studies.
Responsibilities:
- contribute to a research group focused on the study of Estonian sign language;
- conduct research and publish on Estonian sign language;
- collaborate with other faculty members, researchers, and experts in the field, contribute to the university's academic and research activities;
- mentor and guide PhD students in their research endeavors on Estonian sign language;
- establish and foster relationships with relevant stakeholders in the Estonian sign language community;
- prepare applications for research funding through grant applications and external sources.
Requirements for the candidate (incl. professional experience requirements): The candidate must meet the requirements for the research fellow position, listed in the Annex 5 of the Employment Relations Rules of Tallinn University.
- applicants must have received the PhD in linguistics or a closely related field with a specialization in sign language linguistics within five years of start date outside Tallinn University;
- have a demonstrated track record of research in the field of Estonian Sign Language or a related sign language or in general linguistics;
- excellent communication and collaboration skills;
- fluency in English is required, and knowledge of Estonian and Estonian Sign language would be an advantage;
- willingness to work in Estonia and actively engage with the Estonian sign language community.
Start of the employment contract: Time of employment by agreement, until 31.08.2026 (renewal possible).
