Who are you and where are you from?
I am Rakhiya Toxanbayeva, a Ph.D. student from Kazakhstan. I arrived in Tallinn two weeks ago. I adapted to the city faster than I thought I would. Perhaps this is because it is easy to move around in Tallinn and everything is made for the convenience of people. Tallinn University is a well-equipped and modern university, so I definitely enjoy my internship here.

What brought you to Tallinn University?
This is the last year of my doctoral program at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Almaty). I am graduating in May 2023. My foreign supervisor is Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja. Research internships abroad are one of the opportunities that my university provides to students who complete their doctoral theses. I took this opportunity to visit Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja. Her academic background is impressive, and I am confident that her knowledge and experience will give me a new perspective on my PhD thesis. Interning here definitely strengthens my academic reputation.

What do you plan to do here as part of your doctoral dissertation?
I was given access to Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja's office, the library, and study areas of the university. I have already used library resources while working on my research papers. I plan to finish two of my articles here. The topic of my PhD thesis is “Linguo-stylistic and cognitive-pragmatic characteristics of legal discourse: on the material of the English language”. My field of research is a mixture of linguistics, translation studies, legal discourse, and intercultural communication. Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja collaborates with me in all aspects, making it easier for me to write my research articles.

What else are you going to do here under Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja’s supervision?
I plan to attend lectures and seminars by Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja. I will be giving a lecture myself when the spring semester starts. I am looking forward to meeting the master’s students. I am interested in learning about teaching conditions and graduate student performance in the classroom. I hope to make the most of being here because it is an important opportunity for me.
