Born on 17 December 1974
1998 – graduated from Tallinn Pedagogical University in the speciality of Swedish philology
2004 – was awarded a doctoral degree (PhD) in human geography from the University of Tartu
2005 – 2006 was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
2002 - 2005 worked at the University of Tartu as the lecturer in human geography
2005 - 2006 was a research fellow in the Institute of Ecology of Tallinn University
2005 - 2008 was an associate professor of human geography at Tallinn University

As of 2007, she is a research professor in the Centre for Landscape and Culture at Tallinn University

2016 – was elected for the position of Professor in Environmental Management at the School of Natural Sciences and Health of Tallinn University

Professor Helen Sooväli-Sepping is the head of the study area of Natural Sciences and Sustainability, coordinator of Master’s study programmes Urban Governance and Environmental Management.

The main research areas of Professor Helen Sooväli-Sepping are the impact of humans and nature in the urbanising world, communitarianism and involvement, environmental planning and sustainable development.

Professor Helen Sooväli-Sepping has participated in many European and Nordic projects, and in project evaluation committees as an external expert.

She has also participated in the development of the policies of the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Finance, and in the conduct of studies.

Helen Sooväli-Sepping is the editor-in-chief of the Estonian Human Development Report 2019/2020
