Introduction

Kaia Sisask is an Associate Professor of French Literature and Culture, as well as a translator. She has translated into Estonian both works of French literary classics (H. de Balzac, A. Gide, Stendhal, G. Giono) and texts in the humanities and philosophy (M. Foucault, E. Lévinas, G. Bachelard, J. Kristeva, C. Lévi-Strauss, J. Le Goff, J.-P. Schmitt). Kaia Sisask is a member of the Translators’ Section of the Estonian Writers’ Union. Her scholarly interests concern issues of translation, intercultural communication, and the reception of French literature in Estonia. She is also interested in cultural symbols in the shaping of collective identity and in questions of national/cultural self-definition (in both French and Estonian contexts) within today’s rapidly changing value landscape.
