Introduction

Shion Yokoo is a PhD student and Junior Research Fellow in Cultural Studies at Tallinn University, Estonia. She obtained her BA in dance from Viljandi Culture Academy and MA in semiotics from the University of Tartu. Her master’s thesis conceptualises antitheatricality as a reaction to conventionalities in performing arts relying on the notion of signs of signs. Continuing the research on antitheatricality, her doctoral dissertation focuses on antitheatricality in contemporary performing arts in Estonia and Japan from the semiotic approach.
Shion is also active as a contemporary performing artist. Her recent works include a solo production titled “Anti-Theatricality’s Appearances in the Estonian Contemporary Performing Arts”, an installation “Please Water when I am not Here” for the festival “1000 Kurge”, and a performative installation “Peal kiri peal” with Keisuke Sugawara as a part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024.
