New Interactive Platform Brings a Modern and Playful Approach to Traffic Safety Education in Schools

The Centre for Educational Technology at Tallinn University, in cooperation with the Transport Administration, has developed a new web-based collection of learning resources that makes integrating traffic education into daily teaching easier and more systematic. The completed solution is primarily aimed at pupils in grades 1–6 and their teachers.

The need for the new platform arose from a situation where teachers previously lacked a central and systematised resource (while materials existed, they were scattered, and finding them was time-consuming). The new solution consolidates the necessary learning resources into a single environment, offering teachers tools that save time and allow them to focus on substantive teaching.

The created platform is not merely a repository of materials, but a modern learning environment. The content of the platform is built upon D.H. Merrill's First Principles of Instruction and a task-centred instructional design model, ensuring the pedagogical quality of the materials. To engage pupils and support deeper learning, the ICAP framework has been applied, and numerous interactive H5P-based exercises have been created.

The learning materials are based on real-life situations that children encounter daily in traffic, whether as pedestrians, cyclists, scooter riders, or passengers. This helps to shape safe traffic habits and reduce the risk of traffic accidents.

One of the key objectives of the development was compatibility. The materials have been created to be easily integrable with Learning Management Systems (LMS) already in use in schools. This ensures that the new learning resources fit seamlessly into the schools' existing digital infrastructure.

Pjotr Savitski, Alice Aaviksoo, and Priit Tammets from the Centre for Educational Technology contributed to the completion of the project, being responsible for technical development, analysis, and educational technology solutions.
