On 18 March at 14:15 in room A-325, we will welcome Dr Juhyung Shin from Ritsumeikan University (Japan) for a seminar titled “Serious Games: What Makes Them ‘Serious’? Exploring Failures and Potential in South Korea.”

Dr Shin is a researcher specialising in serious games and game-based learning (GBL). Her PhD focused on the use of board games for education in South Korea, and she is currently leading a project on accessibility in gaming. During her visit, she is also interested in learning more about how we research and teach serious games and related topics at DTI.

In her talk, Dr Shin will explore the development of serious games in South Korea, examining why many government-led initiatives struggled to achieve long-term success. Drawing on cases such as the Star Stone project and the rise of BIG GAME, she will analyse common characteristics, challenges, and the evolving future potential of the serious games ecosystem.

All interested colleagues and students are warmly welcome to attend.
