Eurocampus Experience: Folakemi Blessing Awoyo

Flekky

My name is Awoyo Folakemi Blessing and I am a Nigerian. I did my bachelor’s in Mass Communication at Joseph Ayo Babalola University and I am currently doing my master's in Communication Management at Tallinn University.

How I learnt about Eurocampus? I first learnt about the Eurocampus programme from my Professor Anastassia Zabrodskaja. The idea at first was quite strange and new to me, as I had never imagined the possibility of spending half a semester outside of Tallinn University. Nor did I imagine spending it in the UK, because there are no such things as exchange programmes in most universities in Nigeria. When she told us about the programme, it sounded very interesting. I was having mixed feelings on whether to apply or not, but she cleared my doubt as she organized several meetings with us to enlighten us about the programme. She also made us see the benefits and advantages we will gain if we will attend the Eurocampus programme.

What were my motivations to apply? I was motivated to apply when I realized that I was going to a more multicultural learning environment to study for a period of time. There I could also get the opportunity to learn more theoretical knowledge of intercultural communication. In addition, I was motivated when I heard that the programme was going to feature a combination of carefully selected lecturers from various universities and experts in the field of intercultural communication. What else could I ask for? I had no options than to apply, since the advantages I saw in the Eurocampus programme outweighed my doubts.

What were my first experiences?

Studying together in an Eurocampus multicultural group.

Talking about my first experience with respect to the topics I have studied so far, and the lecturers I had met, I have to say that right before I left for the programme, I sensed that I was going to have a wonderful time in Anglia Ruskin University, because from the help I received from them during my application. They gave me all the necessary information about the programme, lecturers, modules and accommodation. When I got here I wasn’t disappointed at all, as I have been privileged to be lectured by Anne Ife. She taught us communicating in a lingua franca which is centered around some of the communication problems that can arise between native and non-native speakers of English in a conversation.  We also discussed about the possible solutions to these problems with practical illustrations. I have also been taught by Stephen Croucher from University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. He taught us intercultural communication theories and models. It was an interesting and interactive class and he handled it awesomely. I have also met Mr. Claus Ehrhardt from University of Urbino. He taught us linguistics pragmatics with major focus on politeness. I learnt some good communication skills as well I enjoyed his teaching as well. Cambridge is an amazing city just like Tallinn except for the fact that it is a world-renowned citadel of learning. The studies here are handled theoretically and practically, and the lecturers I have met so far have been intercultural and super in their teaching. If there is one thing I am going to miss after the Eurocampus programme, it is the Eurocampus culture. We always have the opportunity to sit and chat with our lecturers after each course. This is a great way to know more about our lecturers outside the lecture room. The Eurocampus experience has been worth it. Read more about the programme.
