iCal calendarTitle: VR and AR as Reality Media
Abstract: Reality media is the term that we (Maria Engberg, Blair MacIntyre, and I) use in our book from MIT Press to situate virtual and augmented reality in the context of the technological and aesthetics practices of key media from the 19th century to the present—especially film, photography, and television. In my presentation I will touch on major themes in the book: the “LaCiotat effect," presence and aura, the metaverse and the myth of total VR, and computer graphics and the uncanny. I will also introduce our 3D immersive version of RealityMedia.
