CIC6119.CI Chinese Language A1

The course aims to give basic knowledge in all constituent skills in Chinese language level A1 and to make an introduction to Chinese language pronounciation.

The course introduces Pinyin Romanization system of Chinese language and gives an introduction to pronunciation of Chinese words. Following topics are covered in this class: greetings; daily life; identifying people; asking for direction; giving advice; university study; family; likes and dislikes; making an appointment; making apology. During the course will be learned to read and write 350 Chinese characters and their usage in sentences. Basic Chinese grammar will be learned, such as word order in sentence, main strokes of characters, yes-no questions, questions with an iterrogative pronoun, combined character strokes, numeral-measure words as attributives, optative verbs etc.

Independent work

Individual work for the course should take up 120 hours. Individual work involves fulfilling home assignments, home reading, preparation for individual and group presentations both in oral and written form.

Upon successful completion of the course the student 
1. is familiar with Chinese Pinyin Romanization system and pronunciation 
2. is able to pronounce initial consonants, final sounds and tones of Chinese syllables accurately 
3. knows the pronunciation, structure, meaning and writing methods of 350 basic Chinese characters 
4. understands a new passage in which new words are less than 3%  
5. is able to compose simple sentences and questions using basic Chinese grammar 
6. understands and is able to use familiar everyday expressions (greetings, apologizing) and very basic phrases used in everyday situations (at the shop or hospital etc.) 
7. is able to introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details, family and friends, studies etc. 
8. is able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Assessment methods

The student has to participate in at least 70% of lessons (100 hours), and take all tests and submit all home assignments by deadline.Grades will be assigned based on following criteria: 
Participation: 5% 
5 presentations during the class: 5% 
5 essay writing task before the final exam: 5% 
Final exam in the end of term (listening, reading and writing (75%) and spoken test (25%): 85%

The course is a prerequisite to Chinese Language A2 (CIC6120.CI)
