Presentation Title:
"Home is where the hurt is": Anthropological Insights into Domestic Abuse in Latvia
Studying violence is studying humanity. While Latvians often describe themselves as a peaceful or pacifist nation, the prevalence and tolerance of violence remain high in Latvia. This talk addresses this conundrum by situating domestic abuse within a broader continuum of interpersonal and structural sources of violence. To highlight this continuum, two examples are explored: 1) how the mechanisms used to explain violence against women, such as "power and control”, are often reproduced in the very systems designed to respond to domestic violence; 2) how the collective 'social contract' to protect children from harm falls short in the prevention of child sexual abuse. Additionally, the talk examines the connection between domestic abuse prevention and engaged anthropology, emphasizing the rejection of the role of “passive observer”.
