Choose your favourite Estonian word
On every 14 March, Estonians celebrate Mother Language Day or emakeelepäev because the symbolic Estonian poet and writer Kristjan Jaak Peterson (1801–1822) was born on that very day. We invite you to participate in these linguistic festivities!
Kristjan Jaak Peterson used his mother language – Estonian – to proudly write poetry at a time when Estonian was considered a peasant language, not suitable for culture. His poem „Kuu” (Moon, 1818) was, thus, revolutionary. Today, the Estonian language may sound strange, yet melodic to non-Estonian speaking ears as the long vowels and distinct rhythm of Estonian make it quite unique. In fact, the Estonian language came second in a competition for the most beautiful language with the melodic phrase „sõidan tasa üle silla” (I'm quietly driving across the bridge).
This year, Tallinn University wants to know what Estonian word or phrase is your favourite, dear fellow student or colleague.
Please fill in the form below before 7 March and let us know!
