Eurocampus Experience: Melvis Fozoung Alemazung

Melvis

I am an international student at Tallinn University, Estonia. I study Communication Management MA, my specialty is Intercultural Communication.

How I learnt about Eurocampus? The Eurocampus programme has given me an opportunity to interact with people from different cultures. The Eurocampus was introduced to us by one of our lecturers, Prof. Anastassia Zabrodskaja. She gave us the information about the programme and played us some videos of the previous session that was held at INALCO, France in 2014. In case there were some updates from the host university, Anglia Ruskin University, she always informed us.

What were my motivations to apply? The reason why I applied for this programme is because I saw this as an opportunity to interact in a culturally diverse environment, taking into consideration that the participants were coming from different parts of Europe. This, I thought could help me to gain skills in intercultural communication. Since Britain is an English speaking country, language was also one of the aspects that motivated me to join the programme. I saw this as a great advantage to interact with people more effectively than it would have been in a country where English is not a national language. Also, traveling to the United Kingdom was seen as a privilege to me.

What were my first experiences?

So far, all the experiences have been connected to the programme and the studies as the result of my interaction with students and lecturers from different countries. Interaction has not been the way I was thinking it is going to be due to my perception of a new environment. I have always known that people (visitors) are quiet in a new environment, but this has not been the case here as everyone are communicating and I enjoy it because it triggers the interactive part of me. For example, we discuss about academic cultures during the programme. Students are being told about academic discipline, values and norms of the programme and in exchange asked to share their own academic cultures from their home university. It is an important aspect of the programme, the discussion includes: grading system, lecturers/students relationship, organization of classes, etc. During the first day of the programme, we visited some important places of the university and had a tour around Cambridge’s historic city centre. This was amazing- having a tour in the beautiful city of Cambridge and getting to know more about it. There is cordial relationship between students and lecturers in the Eurocampus and I really like it. We have friendly lecturers which I think has influenced the interactive and participatory levels in class. I will like to seize the opportunity to say a big thank you to Tallinn University for giving me the privilege to participate in the exchange programme in Britain.
