The First Semester

Hello everyone, it’s me, Samuel, again! I shared with you my journey to Tallinn University in September last year at the onset of the autumn 2016 semester. I want to do a recap of the past semester and share my experience; it might be of assistance to someone who is thinking of applying to Tallinn University this year, especially for MA in International Relations. [caption id="attachment_30653" align="alignleft" width="300"]sam Samuel is also our student ambassador.[/caption] During my first semester as a postgraduate student in one of the leading universities in Europe, I learnt a lot inside and outside the classroom. My professors are all knowledgeable individuals who have in-depth insight into their fields of specialization. They motivated us to keep exploring and finding out more to enrich our understanding of international relations both as an academic concentration and as a career. Some of the courses we had will be useful throughout our career; courses such as Research Design and Academic Writing that teach us how to become excellent writers in our field, similarly a course by the name Small States in the Changing World is so relevant in the dynamic political landscape, exemplified by Trump’s presidency and Brexit. Our professors are friendly and always respond to our questions and concerns. Studying in an international atmosphere complemented our theoretical knowledge. Everybody shared their opinions based on their background, thereby giving a wholesome description of different issues under debate. The Tallinn University International Relations Society organized activities for us that contributed to the conventional classroom learning. Under the auspices of the IRS we visited the NATO Cyber Defense Center in Tallinn and got first hand information what NATO and the international community is doing to ensure security of our cyber systems. By the way, I have some good news to share with you! I was appointed as a Vice President of the Tallinn University International Relations Society for this semester.  I am looking forward to give my contribution to the growth and development of this valuable organization. On a personal level I met a lot of people and made connections that have proved useful. The most memorable thing is seeing snow and experiencing winter for the first time! I come from Kenya along the equator, so of course we don’t have extreme cold. Our climate is balanced, highs of 28 to 35 degrees during the hot months depending on your location and lows of 15 degrees Celsius during the cold months. I had a hard time adjusting to the cold weather in Tallinn but I have made considerable steps in that regard. This time round I am better armed with winter gear. The application period at Tallinn University is currently open! I encourage anyone who might be interested, to apply via online platform estonia.dreamapply.com. For those contemplating on applying for the MA International Relations programme I would be more than happy to help you with the application process, you can reach me by email, samuelngangira@gmail.com.
